10 Reasons Why You Don’t Need To Upgrade to Premium LinkedIn

As a super user of LinkedIn now since 2006, I have been using it as a marketing tool more ways than one. Many of my clients are directly from LinkedIn and often times they ask me, “Do you pay for the upgrade?” and I always say “Never, you don’t need to upgrade unless you are in sales or recruiting”. Which is mostly true.

Sure you get to see more than 5 people that viewed your profile, but really….am I going to contact those people that viewed my profile? Probably not. Am I going to invite them to my network via the InMail? Nope. They are out looking for me, they will invite me if they want to connect.

Before I go on with the list, I will let you all know that I have done over 1000 computer repairs for clients who connected with me via LinkedIn and not to mention, the 100′s of referrals from people in my network, sharing with their networks and friends.

Here are my top 10 reasons why you never need to upgrade to the Premium LinkedIn account.

1.) Status updates are free to do. And you should do them daily! Go ahead and tell the world what stories you have to tell today, share your blogs or interesting articles you found.

2.) Joining groups is free. Join up to 50! Groups are the best way to interact with others and then you can invite those members for free just by being in the same group

3.) Participating in groups is free. Talk away! Did you realize that if you never talk on LinkedIn, it probably won’t work for you? Even if you’re the shy quiet type, you have to talk. Get involved in the discussions and chat away in the comfort of your pajamas.

4.) Exporting your contacts is free, export and email people. That’s the point right? If your people don’t like your spam, they will remove you as a contact anyway for “spamming” but spamming is kind of like networking right?

5.) Your profile is in the database and that’s free! Do this…open up your LinkedIn and search “Outlook expert”, I bet you will find my profile right around the first page. Why? Because my profile is full of Outlook words and it ranks high in “LinkedIn searches”. Use that database, be found!

6.) You can profile people for free. Yep, use that search engine, aka…the database. Looking for a Dentist? Why go to the yellowbook, use LinkedIn. I’d rather hire a Dentist off LinkedIn who has recommendations and connections I might know than a stranger off the internet. Now of course, this is just an example, but you know what I mean. Use LinkedIn just like Google. Profile people, then the company.

7.) You can email your contacts via LinkedIn for free. So can others if they are in your groups or have your email address. And the bonus? They come right into your inbox, you don’t even have to log into LinkedIn to respond and reply. Nice!

8.) Getting email digests are free, woo! I love seeing what’s going on within my groups without logging in every minute. The digests give me an overview of what’s going on and then I can comment if I wish, or follow a discussion more in depth.

9.) Starting discussions in a group is free, woo woo! And those remember, go right into every members inbox too (for those that subscribe to discussion feeds). More marketing for you.

10.) Finally…you can still share your blogs for free on LinkedIn to all of your groups. Now is this a good or bad idea? It can be a good idea, but group moderators are smart and have been watching for the article pushers, so I recommend sharing with better detail so your post gets approved. Don’t just spam 50 groups, you might get in LinkedIn moderation Jail. Tough place to get out of.

Read enough? Good! Now get out there and market, network and connect! LinkedIn is great!
