BIOS Freezes

Postby joemessman on Fri Jul 30, 2010 10:27 am

I have a computer that I jumped the BIOS on the motherboard to set it to defaults. I get a screen telling me to reset the processor to correct speed, etc. I go into the BIOS and start to navigate. The computer locks up. I can't make any changes. I have pulled the battery, reset the BIOS again to no avail. Help would be appreciated.

A desktop I presume?

Memory and power supply would be the first things I would check. Check the motherboard over for blown caps as well.

Swap the PSU, give it a try. If no change, swap the memory.

Holler back with the results.

No luck. I swapped PSU, and memory. Made no difference. The computer could not get past the Biostar logo on startup so that is when I jumped the bios. I have tried everything I know at this point. Here is how all of this started. I had a computer with a bad MB. I ordered one just like it that came preloaded with a processor and memory. I installed it. I used a test power supply to make sure it would boot into Windows. It did. I them ordered a power supply for it and also a new heat sink and fan because the one that came on the new "used" MB was really cheap and loud. I installed the new Heat sink and fan. I installed the new PSU and that is when the trouble started and I jumped the BIOS. Ya got me. I have done this a million times before without issues. I wonder if I could ESD'd it? I use a static wrist band though. So........?

unplug everything from the board (hdds/optical drives/data cables) test it with just the bare minimum components.

whats the PSU situation with the main connector? 20 pin or 24pin, adapter or no adapter?

Hi,

If there is a jumper on the motherboard to "Clear the CMOS"or to "Reset RTC" check that the jumper is in the correct position.

If this is not jumpered correctly then you may have odd issues either booting or with the system failing to boot.

Kind Regards

Simon

Checked the jumper, it is OK. Thanks Simon. Johnny I did what you suggested. I can now get to the F8 screen for Safe mode options. Start Windows Normally is selected and it counts down to 20 and freezes. ??. I can make adjustments in the BIOS though now.?

On the hard drive, is this a fresh installation of Windows with the current motherboard, or is it a carry over from the previous motherboard?

Do the two motherboards have the same chipset?

What processor?

Sorry for all the questions....

;), one more....
So what specifically did you end up doing in order to navigate the BIOS now?

Just a thought. Since you got as far as Safe Mode, why don't you F8 to the Advanced Boot Option screen and Enable Boot Logging and re-start windows normally to let it freeze. Then re-start it in safe mode and check the logs in \windows\ntbtlog.txt? Might be some driver clues.

Johnny, this is a carry over of the Windows installation that was with the other motherboard. The new mother board is exactly identical to the previous. Pentium 4 processor. To get to the bios I tap the delete key. Now to answer meClaudisu, when I get to safe mode it will not let me navigate away from Start windows normally. I either have to power down or restart.
