Timster, I'm with you on being in contact with local repair shops. You never know what the future holds...
You may need them or they may need you.
One thing I'd have to know before referring anyone, is the work quality and customer service of the shop.
If I send someone to a shop for whatever reason, and they have a bad experience, it would reflect negatively on me.

I'm also anti-toolbars.

msconfig... Use the Startup in Ccleaner "Tools" section.
You can also use the Glary Utilities "Startup Manager" to disable, delete or delay items in startup.

One tool for you to check out...
SUMo (Software Update Monitor), from KC Softwares. It scans the system and checks for updates on software installed. Some AV programs might flag the utility.

@Blain I agree with you about referring people to quality shops or stores. I have lived here about all my life so I know pretty much who to send them too. I give them the recommendation and be sure to tell them who sent you. I may get a reach around one day.

SUMo seems like a pretty good program but how heavy is it? I mean how much resources does it use?

SUMo found 30 applications that had updates available and 47 applications that were up to date.
FileHippo Update Checker found 13 applications, 3 beta applications and 1 driver that had updates available. FileHippo doesn't report on applications that are up to date.

SUMo can be set to run at startup, but I disabled that function and run it on demand.
Running it on demand is fairly quick & painless. Make sure and watch toolbar, etc during installation.

Downloaded and tried SUMo. Pretty impressive. However, compared with updatechecker, SUMo missed a JRE update (which seems fairly important). Updatechecker will display ALL applications it finds, plus it has the option to scan your entire hard drive looking for apps if you so choose. I will continue to check out SUMo though (good suggestion Blain!). Another one is Secunia PSI. It checks programs more from an out dated/security side, but it is still important in the safety of systems.

i have used Seconia PSI, it is good and soil but i don't think i am going to use it (for myself) just becase it is set on my neck "Try icon", and slow my system.
