XBOX 360 repair

Postby Riggs on Thu Jul 22, 2010 2:21 am

Well I got a friend of mines XBOX 360 the other day. It has the red ring of death and she was just going to toss it so obviously I seen an opportunity to find a new platform to service.

I was wondering though if anybody has ever repaired one and how it went.

Ive repaired mine about 5 months ago and I work the heck out of mine sometimes leaving it on for 8 hours lol and its been fine ever since. Honestly Id love to get more RROD jobs its fun to take them apart. Anyways its actually a very easy fix. Just double check the ring pattern here is a definition http://gameolosophy.com/games/the-xbox- ... efination/

Its a matter of the 360 overheating and causing the thermal paste between the heat sinks and the CPU and GPU to lose connection. The newer xbox's have a better fan so I dont believe this is a issue anymore. But for the rest of us whos xboxs are no longer in warrenty the fix will cost you maybe 15 bucks if that. Bascially you have to break down the xbox to the motherboard and disconnect X-clamps that hold the heat sinks onto the GPU and CPU. You clean up the two surfaces re apply the thermal paste and instead of reusing those X-clamps you use nuts and screws to ensure a good connection. Lastly you overheat it on purpose to flow the paste allow it to cool and boom your done. Ill have to look around I may still have pics from my adventure with my RROD xbox. Theres a plethora of info on the net about this. Grab every RROD xbox you can.

I had one only last week where the overheat trick didn't work, I'm guessing it had been worked on before. Customer told me to hang on to it so I may give it another shot again.

That towel is a temp/doesn't always work trick. Don't keep doing over and over again either you'll just damage the 360 in the end. Honestly it's really easy to fix the right way if you have the patience to do it.

Oh no, I didn't use the towel. I used the method you spoke of.

Oh okay. Well you may have to reapply the paste and reheat if anything.
