Just listening to LftRoU 82 about HP printers.

I will agree that installing the drivers is pretty simple on GNU/Linux, but the functional support provided is not the same as with Windows or OS X. The one example I have hit so far is "Scan to PC".

If you read this, you will see that some printers have "Yes" in the "Scan to PC" column. This does not mean that "Scan to PC" works, only printers that list "DS" in the "Scan to PC" column can actually scan to a PC. The others can only do a "Scan from PC" via SANE.

HP admit this fact in a KB article, so why they put "Yes" when the more correct answer is "Partial" escapes me. "Scan to PC" can still work for some printers if they support "Digital Filing" (e.g. OfficeJet 8500), see this KB article.

OpenPrinting list all these printers as "working perfectly" which is something I take issue with as the support is not feature-for-feature identical to windows and OS X. Maybe I am just being overly pedantic with that?

The HPLIP team do not plan to provide support for "Scan to PC" with GNU/Linux; fair enough, they probably have other priorities. But the whole thing just rankles as I specifically chose HP due to their reported GNU/Linux support. Now I am wondering if I should have gone for a Brother or something else.

And yes, Door, I have an unrestricted motorcycle license and the bike to go with it. :)

From what I understand, getting a bike license in the USA is fairly easy. Over here you now have to pass up to three separate tests (and they are making it harder).

"DS" stands for "Direct Send" and is the only system by which HP will support scan to PC on GNU/Linux.

OpenPrinting is indeed a valuable resource, but I take issue with them listing printers as "Working perfectly" when the features provided are less than for other OSs.

Oh I got my license, I took the federal gov "motorcycle safety" course and test, I liked learning from real motorcycle riders, after buying a house and prepping for marriage money fell short, I had a choice to make a motorcycle insurance payment or a house payment, then after 5+ months of not being able to find the money a good friend made me a cash offer I couldn't refuse

So I am just waiting for a miracle of free money
