I tried this app for the first time last eve., wanted to update a fresh install to latest/greatest from MSoft. I installed the pgm. on a USB stick, went through the steps to initiate the process.

It ran all last night and when I checked this morning, all looked fine. However, when I went to Windows Update to confirm I had everything...I did not.

(Win XP) - Among many other items, SP3 was not installed on the pc even though I had checked it to install in WSUS.

Any thoughts? How do you guys do it?

Well actually I do use WSUS offline updater. I always check for updates after the WSUS install. If you look at the screen while WSUS is installing you will notice that it skips certain updates for one reason or another. That's why there are updates missing when you check the online updates. I will continue to use WSUS because it saves a lot of time.

I have used it, but I find it a little bit hard to use and that it does miss things

I make sure that the clients computers have the latest service packs installed and then set there computers to download Windows updates and install them automatically on their time and their data quota. I prefer to make sure there third party software and plugins are up-to-date and I use Secunia for that.

Just make sure:
1. You are running "UpdateGenerator.exe" to download the updates, and
2. You are running "client\UpdateInstaller.exe" to install the updates

Also, when you are running UpdateInstaller, there is no "option" to install service packs. It does them automatically (as long as they were downloaded with UpdateGenerator)

If you are going to be reinstalling Windows routinely, you couldn't ask for a better friend than WSUS.
There is a learning curve, but it's well worth your time.

One caveat, do not use it on a new install of XP Media Center Edition.
I don't know what the deal is, but the two don't play nice.

I made that mistake a few weeks ago. I was helping out my in-laws by doing a data backup and N&P of their old system. I didn't want to spend all night doing updates, so I just tossed in my WSUS disc. Everything seemed to install just fine, but when it rebooted, it was stuck in a reboot cycle. I ended up having to boot into safe mode and then use System Restore to uninstall all of the updates. Bah! In this case WSUS cost me more time, but I won't forget that you shouldn't use it on XP Media Center in the future.
