I have a client that needs a computer to have a static ip which can be reached from outside the network with handheld pcs but also needs to access a database which resides on the internal network. any clues?

yea we tried that but i don't know if we did it correctly. I actually wasn't the one that did it but I did look at the router settings and seen that she had port 80 opened and forwarding to the ip address of the computer she wanted but it did not work.

it depends "HOW" you need to connect to the machine from the outside... If they want to use remote access then you have to port forward 3389. You may need to VPN into it to access the network shares then you forward 1739 (i think for VPN). There are a lot of questions that have to be answered first, but I am guessing VPN access is what you would need.

Just need to do port address translation. (IE Port forwarding). If its setup right on the router make sure the service on the host is running (IE HTTP) PPTP vpn's require tcp 1723 and protocol 47 (GRE) to be opened up on the firewall.

I'd look into a VPN & remote desktop
or simply a VPN then the handheld can connect SECURELY.

Ideally I'd like a little more information about the setup.
