Hello Zack

Great question, most people just put up with it

But this is Linux, you don’t have to!!!

ok, this is a two part answer to ensure the best speed for your system (ok, it is kind of three, but one is really really short)

First you can try this first step and just stop with it, look at the top part “Use The Fastest Downloading Server” here 5 Great Tips For The Ubuntu Software Center [Linux]http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-tipstricksubuntusoftwarecenterlinux/

Now if that is not giving you the results you expect or you just want to bang the back out of your computer and have your downloads go up to 5 times faster then, ohh I love doing this

first a quickie, it is replacing the default “apt-get” with “apt-fast”, think of it like a torrent, when you download a file it will not download it from a single server but many servers all at once

I love this site, download and install apt-fast http://modifyubuntu.com/#aptFast

Then follow the steps entitled HOW TO USE APT-FAST WITH SYNAPTIC AND OTHER APT GUI (by the bottom of the posting, not the comments) athttp://www.sourceslist.eu/softwaretramiterepository/aptfastandaxelroughly-26xfasteraptgetdownloads/

This will allow every application to run apt-get but the system will actually run apt-fast, and that site say “26x faster”, well that is a bold statement, I will say 5x faster, 26x is nuts, lol

Great question
