Basic Basic – “home partitioning” – Thoughts on Linux partitioning.

Steve,

I just watch your segment on segment on using a separate home partition on #125 via G+ post. I have been doing this for about three years. Benefits are:

1. reinstall are painless like you stated

2. upgrades are worry free.

make a folder in your home directory call “dot_files” copy and then delete your “.folder and .config” files to “dot_config”, had a couple of bad experiences with the move command

upgrade your distro, fresh install, to next version

copy the files and folder from “dot_files” to back to home partition

reinstall programs

if fresh upgrade fails just reinstall previous version of distro and restore “dot_files” back to home directory

Ike or Clem should make a script for their upgrade option for distro upgrades to detect separate home partition upgrade and recovery options

3. Your can compare different desktop environments (DE) on the same hardware and exact config files to see which better suits your needs/workflow using links (got idea GNU World order podcast). This requires and additional partition for another “/” partition

pick a primary “/” partition that is associated with the “/home” partition and the primary grub/lilo boot loader. This distro should be installed lasted for grub/lilo.

install the test DE/Distro first

delete all the preinstalled folders in home directory. In some distros you can’t delete the desktop folder.

make links to you folders in “/home” i.e. documents, picturs videos, .mozilla, .thunderbird, ./config/chromium, etc

install your programs on test DE/Distro

install the primary DE/Distro

install primary DE/Distro programs

Lastly dual boot and evaluate which DE is for you

Weekend Project: Replacing Google Reader with Tiny Tiny RSS – If you are like a lot of Linux users, you get more and more of your information through RSS and Atom feeds: news sites, friends’ blogs, projects’ Planet feeds, automatic content delivered from search engines, and so on. Although there are desktop feed aggregators to help you keep up-to-date, Web services like Google Reader or Bloglines are often more convenient. But what if you don’t feel comfortable putting that much personal information in the hands of a commercial third party, or you simply prefer to use free software? Simple: just fire up a LAMP server, roll up your sleeves, and migrate to a feed reader entirely under your control.

You can choose mail format, either text/plain or text/html. if you are tired of maintaining rss with more than one distributed client and DISLIKE web interface like google reader or bloglines, this software may be for you. rss2imap is an easy to use, preferable software for those who maintain imap server.
