Basic Basic – Freedom can be free

Trisquel GNU/Linux flies the flag for software freedom – Trisquel is a 100 per cent ‘free as in freedom’ GNU/Linux distro.

Even Freedom isn’t perfect – Apache servers ambushed by sophisticated backdoor attacks – Apache servers are being ambushed by a particularly pernicious malware program called Linux/Cdorked. A that’s infecting visitors to the sick machines with the Blackhole malware kit.

And because some sites just suck – PageZipper – Life’s too short to spend clicking “Next” – Ever read one of those top ten lists or photo galleries where every item is on a different page? You spend more time clicking “Next” and waiting than actually reading anything. PageZipper is a free bookmarklet which automatically merges all the “Next” pages into one, so you can skip directly to the stuff you want.

Stanford to collaborate with edX to develop a free, open source online learning platform – EdX will be available as an open source learning platform on June 1. In support of that move, Stanford will integrate features of its existing Class2Go open source online learning platform into the edX platform.

New marketplace connects open source contractors with clients – In any field, a major challenge can be finding the right talent. For open source projects looking for contractors, it’s hard to organize possible candidates from all over the web. Flossmarket hopes to fill that void.

Debian 7.0 ‘Wheezy’ Review – It’s been around since the very beginnings of the Linux revolution in 1993, just short of 20 years. And it’s contributions to GNU, Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) and Linux over its many years make Debian one of the real-true grandfathers of Linux and is most probably the most respected Linux operating systems to date.

a response to the request by +Ryan Ridenour on the latest Linux For The Rest Of Us:

For managing the company accounts, consider Phreebooks/Phreedom (http://www.phreesoft.com) – a self-hosted web-based accounting system. I did a writeup on it at (http://writtenandread.net/phreebooks/) – it is pretty solid, and it is very customizable, so the administrator can hide the parts of the system that should not be available to users. I quite liked some parts of SimpleInvoices (although when I used it, they put quotes in the accounts as an unpaid invoice; that makes no sense at all to me, and I hope they have fixed it), but with Phreebooks you get all of it.

Now: I quite liked Gnucash, too – and when I was working at a lawfirm, I was actually working on dropping in the timetracking system Kimai (http://www.kimai.org/en/documentation/fetch-kimai-sources.html). Again self-hosted, the system has a tracker, so if you are away from home, you can log in, turn on the time tracker for the particular client, do your work and then stop the tracker; with that tool, you can bill the client with precise time later on, or if you have someone doing invoicing, they can pull it right out. It is very effective – of course this will not give you the invoice if you are on-site, but it can produce a receipt for the time spent. I advise getting the latest sources – there is a long time and a lot of features between stable release and development version.
