I had a stroke of good fortune the other day that rarely happens….
A friend brought me a system (HP p6310y desktop) Windows 7 system with dead motherboard.  All other components were fine.
I ordered a cheap replacement from Amazon(through your podnutz link of course) and when I went to hook the board up in the case, EVERY connection fit onto the motherboard without having to hack anything!
I did loose two memory slots, but I could live with that!
MSI Computer Corp. 760GM-P23 (FX) AMD 760G + SB710 Micro ATX DDR3 1333 AMD – AM3+ Motherboard
Personal Stats on Hard drives:
I’ve got 19 hard drives laying here that I’ve replace for people(Obviously I’ve seen more than this, but it’s all I had here to give you stats on…..)
QTY – MFG
5 – WD
4 – Samsung
3 – Seagate
3 – Hitachi
2 – toshiba
1 – maxtor
1 – fujitsu
Just like anything else, I think they all have good and bad products(like printers) and I’m a bit surprised that you don’t see this too since you all do PC repair in some form.
Perspective:  I’m running a Raid-5 disk array on 4x3TB seagate drives.  I’ve heard lots of stories, but these drives have been rock solid for over 2 years. So do seagates really suck, or are vibrations, power spikes or on/off cycles affecting them?
I own three 2TB, seven 3TB and 2 4TB drives now without any failures. Am I lucky?  All consumer grade HDs.
SSD drive do bring lots of life back to old systems and they are getting really cheap!  I rarely see systems here that use more than 20GB of personal disk space.  120GB ssd work great on these systems.  I just updated solid but older Toshiba laptop running Vista and had it booting in < a minute to the browser on google!  Disk was imaged with Acronis and restored to SSD, so it wasn’t a fresh build. High I/O tasks should be allocated to SSD if you want to see performance(Boot/browser cache/etc).
Windows 8.  Geeksters are people who help with Tips and Tricks to make life suck less.  Talking about Windows 8 from a user perspective isn’t helpful.
Try this:  Try to manage your wireless SSID’s in WIndows 8 vs. Windows 7…… you have to do it from the command line now.
PC Security:  Microsoft Security Essentials will keep you safe…. really?  I doubt that any product can truly do that, but the “Paid-for” products seem to do it better!  Instead of cleaning up your system “after the fact of infection”, try putting proactive products on there.
More perspective here:  Love= Avast, Malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, JRT.
After upgrading a frequently troubled system to Avast IS and Malwarebytes Pro($15 lifetime on sale at newegg) and changing their DNS to OPENDNS FamilyShield(208.67.222.123), not much of anything has penetrated it in the last 5 months.
Looking forward to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to build my new VM with Teamviewer for surfing!
Love the show.  Love learning new tips and tricks!
John
