Dear Geeksters,

Heard the latest show (Episode 157)  and really felt the need to talk about why it can be used a maintenance Tool and a backup recovery tool!   I’ll tell you this, I’ve had many of the times when nothing else worked but Spinrite to recover the most out of a bad hard drive.   I’ve also have seen cases where the SMART system was reporting no problems and then when I run spinrite, I get Spinrite warnings from spinrite that the hard drive was about to fail.   Even then after rebooting the hard drive SMART system also starts yelling at me that the hard drive is about to go.   This is one reason why it can be a maintenance utility and also a backup utility.

We are all aware of just how much a defect can grow in the hard drive because of a particle or the usual wear and tear of using it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_hard-drive_defect_management)  I also know that we are always worried about doing more damage then good.   The problem is once it is damaged how do we truly know?  We may never know until we let a program like Spinrite force the hard drive to detect the problem and or make the drive work harder than it has ever done before.   This is the only reliable method that I have found to know if the drive is going to fail or if it is somewhat a healthy drive.   I can not trust the nature of the SMART cards on HDD because each and every company has their own unique way of determining when to tell the end user.   That is the nature of the beast! 😉   Just throwing some of this out there for you to consider!
