Direct MP3 Download: Podnutz Daily #323 – Donald from ifixie.com
A podcast for computer repair techs, BY computer repair techs!
Looking for niches:
If you have an idea that something can be fixed, give it a try. If you get an idea of what may be needed, check if there is anyone out there doing it and be the first person out there doing it. Steve C recommends using Google Keword Tool to search on a term you think may define a promising niche to learn how many people a month are searching a term and how stiff the competition is with AdWords. Donaldrecommends going out on the street and into shops to checkout what customers are buying.
- iPhone Repair
Quick fixes with good resources and cheap parts available, limited competition, no Apple tech certification for iPhone, high demand, high profit margins–introduce yourself.
- MAC Repair
There is lots of ifixit type repair info available which can guide the way. One popular job for Donald has been upgrading hard drives to solid state drives.
- Most small businesses don’t have sophisticated setup or usage patterns.
- It is easy to get started with Home Theatre System installs and calibration with Pixar DVD with THX Optimizerand a pair of Blue Filter Glasses and earn a high profit margin.
Thinking of starting a business?
- Keep at it. Do your best in your day job and keep learning, gradually work your way up.
- If you are in school, take on side repair jobs, advertise around school, get practical experience to reinforce the theory you are learning in school and build relationships. Build your brand while you pursue your education. Jon Evernet Laptop-Medics, part of Evernet Support, built on this idea of business and education mix.
- You can email Donald, donald@ifixie.com, with questions and for recommendation for part dealers for Macs or iPhones.

Peter writes to ask advice on marketing his start-up residential mobile repair business.
Steve C reminds folks of TechSiteBuilder that shows how to build a website like the one he used to get the word out about his computer repair business. Donald enjoys face-to-face contact advertising, hands out small fliers and business cards. Steve C and Donald agree that keeping it simple to get that direct personal contact opportunity to sell to the customer. There is a discussion of several other advertising opportunities.
